Fashionably pregnant in Beach
Gone are the days when denim overalls were what passed for maternity wear By Kelly Gadzala
When my older sis was pregnant 10 years ago, her standard uniform was a pair of denim overalls.
Kingston Road Village shop owner and resident Cheryl Atkinson can relate. The owner of My Bump maternity recalls going to the office when she was pregnant with her first child six years ago. Three of her colleagues were wearing the same maternity outfit, she tells me, just different colours.
Baby, have times changed. Now it’s practically expected for expecting moms to look über pulled-together — even sexy. And whether or not we credit the Hollywood stars for the yummy mummy/look-at-my-sexy-bump phenomenon, we can’t deny the fact that a wide array of fashionable and even trendy maternity wear is breeding like bunnies in today’s mommy market.
…Cheryl Atkinson, who owns, my Bump Maternity in Toronto (mybumpmaternity.com) is another mom who has jumped on the breastfeeding bandwagon. Not only does she carry numerous lines of nursing bras, some of them quite sexy, she’s about to start selling a line of nursing attire from Sweden called Boob (boobdesign.com). Maternity retailers are realizing that branching into the booming business of nursing paraphernalia is a way of hanging onto their maternal customers longer, Atkinson says.
“I laugh with the women who come into my store. We don’t care who sees our boobs. We care about who sees our stomachs,” she says.
The latest delivery in a crop of maternity wear stores aimed at hot mamas is also a great place to shop for baby showers...A small play area with colouring books keeps playschoolers amused, while mums do their own shopping. ...Clothing is mostly casual and fun, with choices from Ripe, Maternal America, Minnow and Momee Maternity, alongside swimsuits and winter coats....
It's not often that an ensemble makes our jaw drop. But when we see what we once thought impossible - proof that funky and maternity are not mutually exclusive - it grabs our attention.
